The efficient hospital
Without counter-measures, the gap between receipts and expenditure in the Austrian public health system will grow to more than one billion Euros by 2010. Measures such as the creation of health platforms are expected to provide some relief. However, individual hospitals must also profit by further opportunities to economize. This is the conclusion presented by Dr. Joachim Kartte, director of the Competence Center for Public Health of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, during a Business Breakfast on the subject of "Efficiency in Hospitals" in Vienna.
"Although receipts have shown a positive tendency over the last few years, the gap between receipts and expenditure is widening constantly. The main reasons for this are the continuing increase of average age in the population and rising costs due to rapid progress in medical science", states Dr. Roland Falb, managing partner in the Vienna office of the international strategy consultants, in his opening speech. For this reason, the health expert has identified three major challenges that Austrian hospitals will have to face in the near future: "The main problems we have to solve are the securing of therapeutic quality, an increase in efficiency and access to funds for investment."
